Christmastime Past # 3

Current Mood: Photobucket

A little while ago I copy/pasted older Christmasy entries from my old website. This will be the third one, from a really old blog which only I ever saw. I didn't exactly advertise it, and back then blogs weren't as common as they are today.

And to be quite frank, I really only had them as an excuse to feed my obsession with posting pictures I'd found... especially the holiday one's. (Some things never change).

If suffering from insomnia or just plain bored, click HERE to read my previous entries for Christmastime Past. (And yes, I realize that entries written in November isn't exactly Christmastime, but it is in our family. That's just how we roll). This particular blog post I'm about to share was written exactly 4 years ago today.

I spent a very long time yesterday attempting to take good pictures of our Christmas village. This camera has a gazillion different settings, but still the pics turned out blurry. This camera has taken good pics before (just not of the village), so in lieu of tossing it in the Brazos River I took video of the village instead.

Alvin and The Chipmunks insisted on serenading during the filming, so if cute talking chipmunks wearing glasses and designer clothes aren't your thing, you might want to turn down the speakers.

Note: If you fit the above description, WHAT'S THE MATTER WITH YOU? How can you not love them, little Theodore especially?

12:27 pm .... Sunny... Glorious 57 degrees
(Hey, I like documenting the important things on historical days)

I just this second got off the phone with my sister. My nephew went to region band tryouts today. Would you know that out of 70 trumpet players, he made FIRST CHAIR?!

FIRST chair out of ALL CENTRAL TEXAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GO LUKE!!!! See, thinking you did bad on TAPS the other day was all in your head. I'm very proud of you. Even if you got last chair, I'd be proud because you always do your best. If you're enjoying band, I hope you keep it up.

Your Mom sure is proud of you. I could have sworn she needed an oxygen tank to keep breathing.

Wise Favorite Aunt Advice:
I think this would be a good time to ask your parents for an early Christmas gift.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Don't be fooled by that innocent face!

My very own Wendy Moira Angela Darling has started eating the miniature Christmas tree from our dining table display. The snowpeople and birds shared with me that they've been ignored thus far, but fear being a midnight snack just the same.

According to SnowWoman Mae, Wendy "has sharp teeth and possesses an insatiable appetite for greenery and fake snow!" Her Christmas wish this year is that the gray-striped feline never catches on that she and her friends are comprised of fake snow, too.

The purchaser of the Christmas display, whom goes by the name "Mom," had comments too crude to share here in her daughter's blog. Close sources reveal that her latest threat was, "I'm gonna kill that $%&# cat!"

The snowpeople and snowbirds report that they can only hope that's true.

Wendy Darling refuses to comment.

So we put up the big Christmas window display a few minutes ago. My father and myself climbed up the ladder about 100 feet to the window ledge with the spirit of Christmas thrumming in our hearts.

Okay, so that relates to me. Dad was just doing what husbands and fathers are supposed to do anyway: climbing great heights (literally) because we told him to. If not for Mom and me, Dad's yuletide cheer would be comprised only of an empty bag of holiday-colored M&M's wrapped in fancy Christmas packaging. A Coca Cola can with Santa drawn on it might accompany the snack, but nothing else. I doubt he'd even have a Charlie Brown Christmas tree.

We were going to wait to put up the display, but Grandma is coming here on Monday and Dad might be sent out of town when it comes time to put it up. We aren't setting the timer for the lights just yet though. It's too early for that, and besides.... the homeowner's association around here is a big pain in the butt and wouldn't allow it. They make stuff up just to send out those notices and feel all superior. (They are all on Santa's naughty list).

All we need to do now is tweak a few things before showing it off. One of the crates and the tree need to be standing on something else to be given more height. I'll post pictures once it's all done and the snowflake twinkle lights are turned on. It's really cute.

And back to the present.....

1. If you want to impress me, forget the fancy pants jewelry and buy me books instead.

2. When I was a child, every Saturday morning those little blue smurfs were always singing la la la.

3. I have to ask you why it's a physical impossibility to lick your elbow.

4. You don't want bad vices; aka bad habits.

5. I didn't have time to wait for really cold weather, so I put up all the Christmas decorations early.

6. A quiet countryside is something I love beyond all reason.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to sleep, tomorrow my plans include having my brother and his new lady love over (which I've never met) and Sunday, I want to relax!

Hmm... looks like I won't be participating with the above blog hop anymore. Apparently, and for some reason completely beyond my comprehension, they think I'm either a spammer or psychic. (Rule change AFTER the new meme was posted, and they told select people about it... but not me as my link was just deleted. So either they have no etiquette, or think I have "all knowing" powers when it comes to last second rule changes).

And while I certainly understand being weary of having spammers only wanting to sell their products, I am NOT a spammer. Are there any products for sale on my page? Are there any ads? Did I make that "Ad Free site" button just for kicks? Are spammers fond of posting Marjolein Bastin pics and boasting about their affection for their niece and nephew, Walt Disney World and Mickey Mouse?

Clearly, that answer would be no.

Christmastime Past - November '08

The other day I decided to look at holiday posts from my old blogs. Feeling nostalgic, I decided to just copy/paste a few entries. I've seen other people do this before, so I figure why not do the same? The first two I'll post below.
As always, they're no biggie and certainly wouldn't win any awards. Photobucket

The first was written exactly four years ago today.

Okay --- so I can't hear those bells here in the humid, snowless and sleigh-less state of Texas, but I can envision it elsewhere, thanks to early Christmas commercials for Folgers coffee and Duracell batteries.

Alrighty now, it's happy confession time:

When the department stores start bringing out the shiny tinsel and plastic reindeer in September, I think that's premature and very unfair to Halloween. But... a few days ago - yes, here comes my confession - I set up our Christmas village.

That is to say, our Christmas village which so happens to have the good fortune of not suffering for sleigh rides and children building snowmen on the lawn with the neighborhood kids. (The grass really is greener... err, snowier I mean... even in fictitious towns, isn't it?)

Does putting up the village the first week of November make me a Clark W. Griswold?

This year the holiday season will not be filled with nothing save angst in an endless quest to find the perfect Christmas gifts. Photobucket

It's going to be brimming over with classic holiday cartoons like Santa Claus is Coming To Town and A Garfield Christmas. I watch those Christmas specials every year of course, but this time I'm going to sit down with a hot cup of cocoa....... and my cat, Wendy Moira Angela Darling, whom is really fond of Mickey's Christmas Carol........ and really immerse myself in their magic.

Note: My cat, Wendy Moira Angela Darling, - yes, she insists on me typing out her full name. She's spoiled and a diva, what can I say? - wants it known that she also loves 'Twas The Night Before Christmas.

Hmm......... I'm sensing a theme here, my Kitty Princess.

.... about rain, don’t you?

It's wet.

It's wet and slippery, ruins your brand new pair of pristine white walking shoes, and invites a parade of flying insects inside your house for the cats to torment and play with.

Worst of all, it makes a girl wish for snow! (Yeah, right. Like that's going to happen in the next 15 years Photobucket). But November rain...... hey, isn't that a song from the 90's?..... didn't stop this gal and her Mom from shopping today.

Not-so-fun fact: I'm sure that elsewhere, rain in November is cold and dreary and quite possibly turns into the white stuff that can construct Frosty-the-Snowman again. You might even be able to perform miracles by bringing said snowman back to life... but only if you could find Professor Hinkle's magical silk hat!

Photobucket

But here in Spring (not the season, but the town), rain is not only a hazard to your hair, but is so icky and warm that it sticks to your skin like flies to flypaper.

Regardless of the weather, we stepped out that door. The rain came in lull's all day, so the umbrella was mainly used as batting practice on the mosquitoes.

At Garden Ridge we bought a pre-lit tree for the big Christmas window display, some ornaments for the new miniature tree, and then more little trees... am I sensing a theme here?...... for our BEAUTIFUL Christmas village. (I'll try to add pics or video of our village sometime later this week. I'm still looking for a little pond to put under the bridge).

Very little Christmas stuff is up right now. Usually not one decoration is put up until the day after Thanksgiving, but this year we're doing things differently. We have so many decorations that putting them all up in a rush can be very exhausting. By the end of it all, we're so worn out that we start feeling a kinship with Burgermeister Meisterburger.

Photobucket

Photobucket

So we're getting into the Christmas spirit earlier this year, and so far it's working nicely.
The only bad news there is that I haven't bought even one Christmas present yet.

You don't have to tell me, I know. That "Big Eastern Syndicate" Lucy spoke of to Charlie Brown is very disappointed in my laziness. I'm sure I'll make up for it before December 25th.
