Just a few Valentine’s Day facts and superstitions. (Who DOESN'T love this stuff?) Enjoy, and Happy Valentine's Day!

Or "Single Awareness Day" as I call it.



BIRDS
Ladies, pay attention to those birds!



Robin: a sailor
Sparrow: a poor man that will bring lots of happiness
Owl: remain spinster
Bluebird: a happy man
Blackbird: a priest or clergyman
Crossbill: an argumentative man
Dove: man with a golden heart
Goldfinch: rich man
Flock of doves: happy and peaceful marriage

- In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who their valentines would be. They would wear these names on their sleeves for one week. To wear your heart on your sleeve now means that it is easy for other people to know how you are feeling.

- The Italian city of Verona, where Shakespeare's lovers Romeo and Juliet lived, receives about 1,000 letters addressed to Juliet every Valentine's Day.
Richard Cadbury invented the first Valentines Day candy box in the late 1800s.

- Alexander Graham Bell applied for his patent on the telephone, an "Improvement in Telegraphy", on Valentine's Day, 1876.

- The oldest surviving love poem till date is written in a clay tablet from the times of the Sumerians, inventors of writing, around 3500 B.C



SUPERSTITIONS



- If an individual thinks of five or six names considered to be suitable marriage partners and twists the stem of an apple while the names are being recited, then it is believed the eventual spouse will be the one whose name was recited at the moment the stem broke.

- In Medieval times, girls ate unusual foods on St Valentine's Day to make them dream of their future husband.

- If an apple is cut in half, the number of seeds found inside the fruit will indicate the number of children that individual will have.

- To be awoken by a kiss on Valentine's Day is considered lucky.

- On Valentine's Day, the first guy's name you read in the paper or hear on the TV or radio will be the name of the man you will marry.

- If you see a squirrel on Valentine's Day, you will marry a cheapskate who will hoard all your money.

- If you find a glove on the road on Valentine's Day, your future beloved will have the other missing glove.

- If a man hands you a key, you will be able to unlock his heart.





GIFTS



- In some countries, a young woman may receive a gift of clothing from a prospective suitor. If the gift is kept, then it means she has accepted his proposal of marriage.

Yellow: Jealousy

Cactus: You will have a quarrel

Oh, yes. If a man handed me a prickly cactus for Valentine's Day... I think there would be a quarrel, too.

I replaced that horrible flower on Mom's Valentine card with another, and I also made a second card. One of these days I'm going to get my hands on some diecuts with stamps to match. I have the Cuttlebug, which I love like crazy, but I never use it from lack of materials.

Fave Blogs, Puppy Love &... Doppelgangers?

I finally got around to making one of my old sites useful. It's only a simple little blog with links to some Blogger sites. I'm sure I'll be adding more links as time goes on. The computer has been acting up and there were a few distractions, so I think I missed adding a few links. Sometime soon I'm also going to add some Disney blogs which will all be listed together.

I finished watching all the "Ghost and Mrs. Muir" tv episodes. The first season was definitely superior to the second, although the S2 episode below is fitting with Valentine's Day coming up. The episode was titled "Puppy Love."



The Christmas episode from Season 2 was pretty good, too, but as I said.... S1 was a lot more entertaining. The picture quality of the Christmas episode was kind of bad, but I was grateful to see it at all. Thank goodness for YouTube!

And this bears repeating: I really enjoyed The Captain in this series. I really didn't think I was going to enjoy his performance so much. Edward Mulhare and Rex Harrison both I'm very fond of as The Captain. I can't believe this series hasn't been released on dvd yet, especially with the recent popularity of anything paranormal.

And speaking of paranormal, take a gander at this picture. It's Nicolas Cage and some Civil War Era photograph. Even the eyes look the same! People are making a lot of jokes about it, and apparently Cage talked about it on Letterman. I haven't watched the interview yet.
